How does memory work?

Memory is state bound - the emotion that is going on for you when you have the experience. So the things you enjoy is remembered the bad things too are remembered.

So we need to set up things that are joyful, fun to help the kids remember.

Research says that all kids have the following in common the all enjoy
Play and being told stories.

Anything supersensory, joyful,  will be remembered
Something that's bizarre
